Make it a whole-house effort
I can’t imagine trying to eat a Paleo diet without my husband doing the same. I don’t have much willpower when it comes to food, and while I truly enjoy Paleo meals, the convenience and speed of processed, packaged food is generally a temptation I fail to overcome when it stares me right in the face.
Sometimes you making a change and feeling great can be enough to convince your spouse, partner, or roommates to do the same. However, I know that’s not always the case. If your family isn’t willing to make a change, don’t force the issue! I love that Michelle from Nom Nom Paleo reminds us: It’s “not something to break family relationships over.”
That being said, if it’s possible for you, the first step to living a Paleo lifestyle is to rid your house of foods that aren’t Paleo. Throw it away or take it to the office. (Maybe I shouldn’t recommend that, but at least food won’t be wasted as you wait for your chance to convert your coworkers!)
Also remember (especially those of you with families!), you don’t have to be “Paleo Perfect.” As you may know, Darrick and I follow an 80/20 rule. If you eat paleo 80 percent of the time, you’ll reap almost all the benefits. After awhile, you also may find yourself (as we have) naturally following more of a 95/5 diet, just because you feel so good and it’s become your way of life. This is our hope for you!
One question I can’t answer with personal experience (yet) is: How can I get my kids to eat Paleo?
Michelle (Nom Nom Paleo) is a mommy and a Paleo blogger. She says that feeding kids a Paleo diet is a process! It’s not easy, but gets easier. Sometimes it’s out of your control, but hopefully those times will become less and less common.
